Work Day has been an important day for the Trust, the community and the students of Year 10 who are freed from classes for the annual Branches Work Day. This is their key opportunity to contribute to fundraising for their camp. A date for the 2018 work day is yet to be set.
Students are encouraged to work at least five hours at a starting rate of $10 an hour. Most students organise their own jobs but we do provide assistance for those who need it. Last year we launched a new initiative and this article was published in a local paper:
“Double Good Deed” Initiative for Wakatipu High School Student Work DayWakatipu Basin Residents are being offered the chance to do a “Double Good Deed” in mid-November through a new initiative by the Branches Charitable Trust and Year 10 students at Wakatipu High School. “Double Good Deed” (DGD) allows businesses and individuals to make a donation to the Year 10 Work Day raising funds for Branches Camp(Good Deed 1), which will pay for a student being allocated a job of helping in the community (Good Deed 2).
DGD initiator and Branches Charitable Trust trustee Bennie Neilson said the initiative was designed to unleash a double dose of community good. “It means people or businesses who would like to contribute to the unique opportunity Branches Camp offers Wakatipu youth but don’t have any jobs to offer can offer that help to someone who really needs it.”
For instance, a donation of $50 could see a student assigned to help an elderly person for five hours raking leaves, weeding the garden and cleaning windows. “Double Good Deed donors can either say who they’d like the work done for or just give an untagged donation, as there are lots of people and community groups who could do with a hand,” Mrs Neilson said.
Branches Camp is the annual "rite of passage" 12 day camp held at Branches Station beyond Skippers Canyon for all Year 10 WHS students. It is the longest running secondary school outdoor education camp in NZ, having started 50 years ago.
At base camp the students will dig their own long drops and go without power and technology for 12 days. They will take part in a range of activities including kayaking, a three day tramping expedition, rafting and abseiling.
